Vicky Thomas is an artist, Army veteran, and web designer. She and her husband live with their horses near Southern Pines, NC. Their mare, Fabs, is pictured above with Vicky and Thom.
Why I called this "Soft Moment"
When a rider has a clear understanding and communication with the horse's mind, then the stage is set for something really beautiful, connected, relaxed, 'together'. I was at a riding clinic with Fabs in 2015 and a photo (by Rebecca Eddins) captured this moment when Fabs was soft, waiting and confident. I wanted to capture that feeling in this drawing.
Fabs came to us as a 5 year old, she didn't know much and had never been ridden. She is a sweet mare but also naturally skeptical and somewhat bossy. So, convincing her that I was trustworty took some time and focus. This mare has taught me so much about how to meet a horse 'where they are' and form a partnership with them. The resulting 'softness' is a gift and a treasure. ~Vicky
